Identification and traceability

We have been certified in the ISO 9001:2015 standard. I am getting conflicting information from my two consultants regarding an issue. In standard 8.5.2, it is regarding Identification and Traceability. One consultant says we must identify all raw materials coming into the production process and be able to trace the raw materials, regardless if the customer requires this. Another consultant says this is not necessary. We do not manufacture parts for airplanes nor the aerospace industry – we manufacturing quality testing systems which those companies may use to TEST their parts before they are put on the planes.

What is your opinion? Thank you for your time and attention.

Answer:

The worst thing you can do is to hire two consultants at the same time, it is the safest way to get conflicting information :) Jokes aside, the standard requires organization to apply methods for identification and traceablity only to the outputs of its processes, not the inputs (raw materials, etc.). If you don't have explicit requirement from your cu stomer to perform identification and traceability of your raw materials, you don't have to do it.
