Wording in ISO 9001

Thank you for a well written document; Checklist_of_ISO_9001_2015_Mandatory_Documentation. My question is with regard to this document. How did you derive what documents, procedures and records that are mandatory/non-mandatory? When I read ISO 9001:2015, this is not obvious. Is it the choice of wording in the standard that is the answer? In that case, how should I interpret the wording?

Answer:

You are correct, depending on the wording used documented information is mandatory or not mandatory. These are the words used in ISO (International Standard Organization) and their definitions:

- "shall" indicates a requirement
- "should" indicates a recommendation
- "may" is used to indicate that something is permitted
- "can" is used to indicate that something is possible, for example, that an organization or individual is able to do something
